THE PRESIDENT OF AFRIPOL GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONGRATULATES AFRIPOL UPON HOLDING ITS FIRST WORKSHOP”

Algiers, Algeria, 26 October 2017:The AFRIPOL Secretariat held its first workshop in Algiers, Algeria,on “Capacity-Building in the Fight against Transnational Organized Crime, Cybercrime and Terrorism”, from 24-25 October 2017. The meeting was attend by Police agencies from African Union Member States, ACSRT, CISSA, INTERPOL, EUROPOL, and Partners.

The President of the AFRIPOL General Assembly, H.E. Major General Abdelghani HAMEL, thanked the participants for attending the first workshop organized by AFRIPOL Secretariat, and called for enhanced commitment by the Police agencies of the Member States in the implementation of the AFRIPOL 3-Year Work Plan 2017-2019.

 

The workshop gave opportunity to the national Police agencies of the AU Member States to exchange views and share experiences and challenges in preventing and combating transnational organized crime and terrorism. Participants also provided a picture of the security threat posed by these crimes in their countries and highlighted areas for capacity building and technical.

 

Participants observed that Transnational Organized Crime, Cybercrime and Terrorism continue to pose a major threat to peace, security, stability and development on the continent, and noted the growing relations between these different crimes. In this regard, participants noted that countering one crime effectively would have positive effects in countering others, and called for enhanced cooperation among the Police agencies on the continent and globally in preventing and combating these crimes.

 

In the area of cooperation with other regional police agencies, participants emphasized the need to develop working relations with INTERPOL, EUROPOL, AMERIPOL and ASEANAPOL. Cooperation with other relevant African Union entities like the ACSRT, and agencies like CISSA, was emphasized.

 

The workshop adopted a set of recommendations on what should be done at national, regional and continental levels to strengthen cooperation in preventing and combating transnational organized crime, cybercrime and terrorism.

 

The workshop was closed by H.E General Major Abdelghani HAMEL, President of the AFRIPOL General Assembly. He congratulated all participants and the Executive Director on holding the first workshop, as part of AFRIPOL'S program on capacity building
