Visit of the European Union Ambassador to Algeria to the AFRIPOL Headquarters
Algiers, 3 February 2026 – The AFRIPOL Headquarters hosted the official visit of H.E. Mr Diego Mellado, Ambassador of the European Union to Algeria. The European Union delegation was received by H.E. Ambassador Jalel Chelba, Acting Executive Director of AFRIPOL, accompanied by senior officials of the Organization. This meeting formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional dialogue and the partnership between AFRIPOL and the European Union in the field of security.
The discussions provided an opportunity to present AFRIPOL’s mandate, missions and key activities, as well as its role as the continental mechanism for police cooperation. A comprehensive overview was given of the current state of EU–AFRIPOL cooperation, including the projects and programmes in which AFRIPOL has been involved in recent years, whether ongoing or completed, as well as the challenges identified and areas for further enhancement.
The exchanges also focused on prospects for developing this cooperation, with a view to strengthening or relaunching collaboration. Finally, AFRIPOL outlined its strategic priorities in order to identify new partnership opportunities with the European Union, in response to the current and emerging security challenges facing the Member States of the African Union.
