On September 9, 2024, AFRIPOL launched the first session of its Trainers’ Training on Teaching Methodology course, accessible through the AFRIPOL Learning Management System (LMS) at https://afripol.au-learn.org . The initiative marks a significant step forward in AFRIPOL’s continued efforts to enhance the capacity of police services across the African continent. By empowering police trainers, this course aims to equip participants with the skills needed to deliver effective, high-quality training that meets the growing demands of modern law enforcement.
Today’s challenges of law enforcement agencies include transnational organized crime, cybercrime, and terrorism, require not only advanced technical skills but also innovative approaches to training and capacity building. This Training of Trainers (ToT) course has been carefully designed to provide police trainers with the latest teaching methodologies and tools, enabling them to effectively transfer their knowledge and skills to their peers and colleagues.
The training program is divided into two phases: Phase one (Module 1), held from September 9-20, 2024, is an interactive, web-based learning phase that introduces participants to theoretical foundations through online modules. Phase two (Module 2), scheduled from November 4-10, 2024, will be conducted in person in Algiers, Algeria, and focuses on practical, hands-on training. Through this process, AFRIPOL is building a network of skilled trainers who will have essential skills in designing, delivering, and assessing training programs that are not only impactful but also aligned with the specific needs of their police forces.
Initially, this training was developed to strengthen the capacity of 80 trainers who had previously undergone training with AFRIPOL in partnership with the German Federal Police (GFP). These trainers had been trained in various domains of forensic science and are now equipped to transfer the knowledge they acquired according to international standards. Moving forward, the training will expand to include trainers from other police services of AFRIPOL’s member states.
Both phases of this first session feature participants from Botswana, Eswatini, Uganda, Zambia, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Madagascar, Namibia, Ghana, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Gambia.
